El Nino…10,000 Islands & Marco Island Fishing Report- January 2016

January is in the books and what a feast or famine month it was! The Florida "winters" typically bring us a mild cold front each week, but this past January Mother Nature threw us a pile of cold weather, high winds, a few tornadoes, a meteotsunami and record rainfall, with the latter being extremely rare for the month of January. This dropped water temperatures into the low 50's and they never really got too much north of the low 60 degree range all month. These conditions made it difficult at times to consistently pattern fish as they simply scattered or were lock jawed, but on the steady weather days, we certainly caught our fair share of redfish, spotted sea trout and black drum....our winter time residents. We also had a great King Mackeral bite, while being short-lived. All of these conditions are adding up to a true El Nino weather pattern. The month of February is off to a good start with a high in the low 80's today and water temps in the mid to high 60's. This should really charge up the bite and the new moon periods should be stellar. Book your trips early as we are as busy as we've ever been! Tight lines and screaming drags folks.
